After reading We Real Cool by Gwendolyn Brooks, in common lit, I have a good understanding that the main idea is kids doing bad things because they think it’s cool. In my opinion, I think the meaning of “We real cool”, is that people do things that aren’t necessarily good because they feel like that’s their way of them being cool. Or, thats their way of grabbing attention to others and making other people think their cool. For example in the text it says “We real cool. We Left school. We Lurk late”. After reading that it gives me a good idea of leaving school when they weren’t supposed to makes them cool in a way, or going out late makes them some kind of a wild person or a bad kid, and these things make them “cool”. Common Lit is very useful. It helps me with understanding what i’m reading because it has a set of questions to answer after iv’e read something. Which is very helpful when trying to learn more about what i’m reading. Also, it has the highlight text box that helps me identify the most important things in the text, not only that but could help me keep up with my place. Lastly, it has the read text aloud box, which is a great tool because sometimes I can’t comprehend what i’m reading when I read it to myself, therefore it’s easier to comprehend when someone else is reading. So these are some ways that Common Lit is useful.
Archetypes
In the play “Julius Caesar”, there are three archetypes found. An Archetype is an original that has been imitated, it also can be none as a pattern or a repetition. There are also different types based on what the Archetypes can be Situational,character ,and symbolic.
One archetype that was found in the film “Julius Caesar” is quest. A quest is a long or arduous search for something. in the play of Julius Caesar they were on a quest. Antony became so corrupted in their quest for power that they killed Julius Caesar, so as to gain his power. This archetype can refer back to the movie “Journey”. Journey is about how a guy is on quest to find his pawpaw on an ancient Island.
The next archetype that was found in the film was hero. There hero in the film Julius Caesar was Brutus. Brutus was the hero because he killed Brutus. This can refer back to the next movie I chose, which was called “Max” I chose that movie because Max killed a lot of people just to help others out.
My last archetype was heaven and earth. In the story things fell from the sky, Such as thunder, rain, and fire which symobolized heaven and earth in the movie. The movie I chose for this archetype is romeo and Juliet.
I chose these archetypes because the archetypes that I chose could help the reader better understand what their watching. Also, it shows that all kinds of movies could have similar archetypes and be alike.
Puritans and Predestination
The puritans were a group of people who grew in the Church of England and worked towards religion and moral and societal reforms. The Puritans believed in predestination. Predestination is “the divine foreordaining of all that will happen, especially with regard to the salvation of some and not others. It has been particularly associated with the teachings of St. Augustine of Hippo and of Calvin.” Puritans believed in Jesus and the participation in the sacraments could not affect someone’s salvation.
The belief in predestination affected the way puritans lived. It affected the way Puritans lived because predestination kept all puritans constantly working to do good in life, there was also strict disapproval and discipline. Predestination affected their way of life and different beliefs such as the Puritans believed that the Bible was God’s true law, and that it provided a plan for living.
The Puritans created the first formal school in this country, the school system established from the puritans was much different from regular school systems. Colonial education and religion education in puritans were that the Elementary schools were established in the colonies with a strong system on religion. Their school system had a lot to do with their belief with predestination. The puritans who came to secondary schools were rare outside major towns such as Boston and New York. The Puritans schools and collages were sprung up.
A Teacher That Changed My life
Throughout my lifetime, many people have changed my life. Whether it’s a good change or bad change. These people have impacted my life and helped me to look at things differently. My mom is the main person who has changed my life and brought good to it, but thats usually the obvious.
However, there is a teacher that has changed my life too.The person I look up to and has change my life is Martin Luther King Jr. I say this because he is a very strong man. It took him courage and motivation to stand up for what he believed in, even when he knew people didn’t 100% agree with him. knowing that there were people that disagreed with him made him even stronger.
The reason I say this is because he was the one who had the most impact on the world and changed it completely. I wasn’t born in the time period of 1963, but to this day I look back and refer that to my life because he motivates me to stand up for what I believe in and what I feel is right.
If there is something that I believe, I should stand up for it. If it wasn’t for him, we would still be living in a time period of terror, and racism worse than ever. That just goes to show that you should stand up for what’s right, even if it could cause conflict because it could change the world and impact others too.
The best way he has changed my life is helping me to realize that everyone is equal and you shouldn’t judge someone by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
Conflict at Gymnastics
I did Gymnastics for 4 years. I loved it. It was my passion. I never thought I’d ever love anything more in my life than I loved gymnastics. I loved my coaches they were like my family. I took gymnastics at WPA in Oxford Al. It was so much fun to me, and it kept me going.
Until one day, on a Tuesday, I wen’t to gym practice. It was a regular 4-7 gymnastics practice. Nothing was odd to me, Until I got on the beam. I did my beam routine just fine, after I finished my beam routine, I started practicing other skills.
I was all about learning new things, and new skills on the beam. Beam wasn’t my favorite but I still loved it. It was all about balance which I wasn’t the best at. So I decided to learn something new. I had been working on my back walkover on the beam for a couple of weeks so why not try it.
Once I did my back walkover a couple times on the beam being spotted, I felt motivated so I tried it by myself. One I bent over to grab the beam with my hands, my hands missed the beam and I fell completely off the beam and hurt my foot really bad. I tried to stand up but I couldn’t. At this moment, I was sure I broke my foot.
Gymnastics was my favorite thing ever, no doubt! I knew that with having such a dangerous sport there was going to be times where I get hurt, and injuries will take place. However, my mom told me she didn’t like me doing gymnastics because of how dangerous it could be and said “If you get hurt, i’m taking you out of the sport”, at this moment I knew that I would know longer be doing gymnastics. This caused conflict in the gym, and where I did gymnastics at.
How to survive by oneself in extreme cold weather.
This week we watched a video clip called, “To build A fire”. This story led me to the topic of how to survive by oneself in extreme cold weather. I found this topic very interesting. The video clip showed a man traveling through extreme cold weather with a dog. The weather was very cold temperatures that led to the man to build or attempt to build a fire.
Some questions that relates to my topic is, “what should you bring in order to survive cold weather?” The next question is, “what should you wear for extreme cold weather?”, Lastly, “How long can you survive cold weather without freezing to death?” These are some questions that the clip drove me to ask.
In paragraph above, it talks about the questions I asked about the video clip. In the first question I asked “what should you bring in order to survive cold weather” The answer to that is you should bring a backpack to put useful things in such as a fire starter (lights, Wood, matches, etc). The next question I asked was “What should you wear for extreme cold weather?”, the answer to that is you should wear cotton, wool, fleece, warm boots such as rain boots to keep from freezing snow getting your feet wet, and neck gaiter.
These questions are useful questions that helped me better understand what I was reading. Also, it helped give me a little back ground information about “How to build a fire.” From the questions, I learned more about how to survive weather in cold temperatures. Some things I didn’t know, I now know from doing research. From watching the video clip it is very similar to another movie I watched called “RevenantThisThis.”, In that movie it was about an older man trying to survive cold temperature but had trouble doing so.
The best part of this assignment was looking up information and doing research for the questions I asked. It was the best part because I learned a lot from it. I now know how to survive in cold weather which I find very interesting.
